Hollydale Library was founded in 1929, apparently in a house on Paramount Boulevard. Later the library was moved to a commercial building on Main Street near Garfield Avenue. In 1945, the library lost its lease and was closed. It was reopened in May 1948 in the same building with a larger space. In the 1960’s, plans were made to build a larger, more modern public library for the prospering community that was home to several major manufacturers, including General Motors. In 1973, the Leland R. Weaver Library, named in honor of a former South Gate councilman, was officially opened to the public at its present location on Tweedy Boulevard.
