Three hundred and thirty years ago the artist Jan van Neck (1635–1714) painted ‘The anatomy lesson of Dr. Frederik Ruysch’ (Fig. 1).The painting belongs to the well known series of group portraits that were made for the Amsterdam Guild of Surgeons [1].Today, most of these paintings are on display in the Amsterdam Museum.
